Africa’s first stadium constructed with sustainably sourced timber opened on May 12 in Maseru, Lesotho’s capital city.
The stadium, called the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Stadium of Life, uses 8,584 treated Eucalyptus poles to reduce embodied carbon. The poles were ethically sourced from plantations in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Rise International led the design and construction process.
It includes a ‘biodiversity stand’ showcasing diverse flora from across Lesotho’s 10 districts. A small outdoor amphitheater provides space for educational sessions and cultural performances.

Gerard Busse, FSC’s Africa and Middle East regional market development manager, says, “Project certification verifies that the forest materials come from responsibly managed forests, ensuring the promotion of environmental stewardship and community development.”
Peter Alele, FSC’s Africa regional director, says the project highlights Africa’s potential to set global benchmarks in sustainable forestry.
The stadium is part of the Kick4Life Centre, which opened in 2011 with support from FIFA, the world’s football governing body. On May 12, a gymnasium and health club were also unveiled at the center. The facility was constructed using four repurposed shipping containers.
