What Is a Backer Rod and Why Does Every Expansion Joint Need One?
The backer rod is one of the least glamorous but most important components in an expansion joint sealant application — and one of the most frequently omitted.
What is a backer rod?
A closed-cell polyethylene foam rod inserted into the joint gap before applying sealant. It controls the depth of the sealant and creates the correct sealant geometry.
Why it matters:
1. Controls sealant depth
Sealant in a joint should be no deeper than its width — the ideal width:depth ratio is 2:1. Without a backer rod, sealant can be applied too deep, wasting material and causing cohesive failure.
2. Allows correct joint movement
The sealant should bond to two surfaces only (the two sides of the joint), not the bottom. The backer rod prevents bond to the substrate, allowing the sealant to stretch correctly under movement.
3. Reduces sealant consumption
A properly placed backer rod reduces sealant volume by 30–50%, directly reducing cost.
DSeal supplies backer rods in all standard diameters from 6mm to 50mm. Always specify backer rod alongside your sealant.
