Expansion joint issue closes Springfield’s West St. Bridge

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The West Street Bridge, connecting Ludlow and Indian Orchard in Springfield, remains closed indefinitely due to an expansion joint issue.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) inspected the bridge Monday, but results will not be available until Tuesday, according to Chris Signoli, Springfield DPW Director.

The bridge closure is due to a significant bump caused by an expansion joint issue, which has raised concerns among residents. The Springfield Department of Public Works (DPW) noted that the bridge has seen increased traffic recently because it lacks a weight limit for vehicles.

Part of the inspection aims to determine whether previous work done two years ago by the DPW is contributing to the current issues.

The city hopes to expedite repairs and complete them in the coming months, with updates expected as soon as the inspection report is released.
