Memorial Bridge in Quincy Closed for Emergency Repairs, IDOT Says
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that the Memorial Bridge in Quincy, Illinois, is closed for approximately four weeks due to emergency repairs.
Why Is the Memorial Bridge Closed?
According to IDOT, the closure is the result of a failed expansion joint that impacts the bridge’s driving surface. The issue was discovered Monday night, and the bridge was shut down immediately to ensure driver safety.
Expansion joints allow a bridge deck to safely expand and contract with temperature changes. When they fail, it can create unsafe driving conditions.
IDOT says its “in-house construction team will handle the repairs to speed up the process. The project will also include replacing concrete that must be removed to fix the expansion joint, along with any additional necessary repairs.”
How Long Will the Memorial Bridge Be Closed?
The Memorial Bridge closure is expected to last about four weeks. However, IDOT notes that the timeline could change depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen delays.
Officials say they are working to reopen the bridge as quickly and safely as possible.
Alternate Route: Bayview Bridge Now Two-Way
During the Memorial Bridge closure, the Bayview Bridge will accommodate two-way traffic for commuters traveling between Illinois and Missouri.
Drivers crossing the Mississippi River between Quincy and West Quincy should expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
Motorists are reminded to:
- Allow extra travel time
- Obey all speed limits
- Use Caution in Work Zones
- Watch for Updated Traffic Signage
