Lane Construction has landed a lead role on a major Florida infrastructure project along Interstate 4.
The infrastructure builder was named the preferred team to design and construct a $582 million segment of the Florida DOT’s Moving I‑4 Forward program, according to an April 9 announcement.
The builder’s segment of work, Project 2, is one of six phases for the Moving I-4 Forward program. As part of the scope of Project 2 work, Lane will:
- Reconstruct and widen a 3.1-mile stretch of Interstate 4 from east of County Road 532 to west of World Drive in Osceola County.
- Reconfigure the state Road 429 interchange.
- Provide new ramps to and from state Road 538, also known as Poinciana Parkway.
Lane’s work will build two new express lanes in each direction along I-4, which stretches across the state from Tampa to Daytona Beach.
The work aims to create smoother, safer movements for both general‑use and express‑lane traffic. Meanwhile, the final configuration will expand the interstate to four general‑use lanes and two express lanes in each direction.
Lane, which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a subsidiary of Italian industrial firm WeBuild Group.
Moving I-4 Forward is itself a part of the larger Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, the largest infrastructure program underway in the Sunshine State, per the news release.
The Moving I-4 Forward contract, facilitated by FDOT, is a modified phased design-build project. This method differs from a typical design-build contract in that instead of awarding one firm the design contract, FDOT will pick three businesses based on experience to develop a collaborative and cost-effective plan, according to the agency.
Lane considers Florida a core market, according to the announcement, and the infrastructure builder has won other work on I-4 throughout the state. Projects on the interstate include the Route 33 interchange in Polk County, the Route 535 and Sand Lake Road interchanges in Orange County, and the I‑275 interchange in Tampa.
In addition, Lane also won a design-build contract worth $238 million to improve I-75 in Marion County last August.
