Ho Chi Minh City expressway partially closed for one month for repairs

According to Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering Joint Stock Company (VECE), the operator of the expressway, repairs on the expansion joint at pier P26 of Long Thanh Bridge, part of the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway, are expected to take 15 days, starting July 15.

Construction crews will barricade half of the bridge’s left lane (direction from Dong Nai to HCMC) and impose a reduced speed limit in the area for safety reasons.

In addition, the expressway’s ITS, an integrated traffic management system using advanced technologies such as sensors, communication networks, and data analytics to enhance transportation safety, efficiency, and sustainability, will undergo maintenance. Work on this system will narrow lanes and reduce speed limits at 64 locations over the course of one month, continuing until mid-August.

“Traffic congestion will be hard to avoid during the construction period, so drivers are advised to slow down, maintain safe distances, and regularly check traffic conditions when planning their routes,” a VECE representative said.

Expressway operators, traffic police, and other related agencies will be on-site to manage traffic flow and minimize disruptions.

Opened in 2015, the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway spans 55 kilometers with four lanes and two emergency lanes, connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau beach town and Dong Nai. Long Thanh Bridge is the largest structure along the route, measuring over 2.3 km long and 19.7 meters wide, featuring four lanes with a designed speed limit of 100 kph.

Previously, in September 2024, an expansion joint on the bridge was also repaired due to prolonged wear.

The expressway has frequently experienced overload during weekends and holidays. Traffic pressure has further increased since the expressway was connected to the Dau Giay–Phan Thiet Expressway, which leads to popular tourist destinations Da Lat and Phan Thiet.

In August, the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway is set to undergo expansion along a nearly 22-kilometer stretch.
