Roofing Contractor Group Publisher Jill Bloom chats with Thea Dudley, widely known in the industry as the “Credit Overlord” and CEO of Pocket Protectors. The discussion centered around Dudley’s upcoming four-hour workshop at METALCON titled “Blueprint for Back Office Success,” aimed at equipping contractors with essential credit and collections tools. The workshop happens on October 21. METALCON takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Can’t Miss Class at MetalCON – Back Office Success

Thea Dudley will lead a four-hour METALCON workshop, Blueprint for Back Office Success, on October 21 in Las Vegas, teaching contractors how to strengthen credit, collections, and cash flow management. With a hands-on approach, Dudley and her co-instructors will help participants build practical policies and overcome common roadblocks like invoicing delays and reluctance to ask for payment.

Despite the perception that financial management might be a dry topic, Dudley’s signature energy and humor made it clear: mastering the back office is anything but boring—and it’s critical for business survival. “Contractors don’t usually fail because they can’t get work,” Dudley explained. “They fail because they don’t get paid for it—or they don’t manage their cash flow properly.”

Dudley emphasized that many contractors stumble over invoicing delays, poor billing accuracy, and a reluctance to follow up on unpaid accounts. Her session will cover everything from building a credit management system and vetting customers, to crafting a collections policy and securing payments through lien rights and joint checks.

One highlight of the workshop will be its practical, hands-on approach. Participants won’t just listen, they’ll build. Dudley and her team will guide attendees through creating their own credit and collections policies, complete with downloadable templates via QR codes and a comprehensive resource guide. “It’s not rocket science,” she noted. “People just don’t know where to start. That’s what we’re going to fix.”

Co-instructors Megan Crow and Alan Francis will join Dudley on October 21 to ensure each participant gets personalized attention. Registration is available through the METALCON website under the in-depth workshops section.

Dudley didn’t hold back when addressing the biggest contractor roadblocks: discomfort around asking for money, fear of lien discussions, and assuming long-term relationships eliminate the need for formal processes. “People think it’s rude to ask to be paid. But how rude is it when you’re out the money?” she asked pointedly.

As Bloom wrapped the episode, she encouraged contractors to take full advantage of the session. “Stay safe, stay healthy—and collect your money first,” she said. Dudley echoed with her trademark directness: “Because if you don’t, you’re going to get burned.”
