Across the United States, roofing contractors face unpredictable weather, rising customer expectations, and mounting pressure to deliver durable results. For many, performance, reliability, and trust in a manufacturer are non-negotiable—and those standards have led roofers across the country to TAMKO’s Proline® series: Titan XT® and StormFighter FLEX® shingles.

In each of their communities, these contractors have experienced firsthand how product performance and a manufacturer’s responsiveness can make a difference, not just on the job, but in customer relationships and company reputation.

“They Built What We Asked For”

Mike Awalt | Awalt Construction, Denver, Colo.

For Mike Awalt, roofing is personal. After working with companies that “just cared about money,” he founded Awalt Construction with a simple principle: put people first. So, when he found a manufacturer that listens to contractors, it stood out.

“One thing I’ve seen is the consistency of listening to contractors,” Awalt said. “What the roofers want. What the laborers want. And they’ve worked really hard, I feel, to design what they’re being asked to design. That’s something that I can honestly say when you go to other manufacturers and you ask them, ‘Hey, I’m looking for X, Y, and Z in a shingle. What are your thoughts?’ And they just kind of go, ‘Well, we’re working on it.’ And then five years later, maybe something happens. But TAMKO, they listen to you. They really do.”

Based in Denver, Awalt’s crews often work through the cold spring months. That’s where product performance becomes critical—and where he’s seen success with the StormFighter FLEX® shingle.

“We don’t start seeing temperatures really get to those 50s and 60s and 70s until May, June,” he explained. “The biggest phone calls that we always get after we install a roof where it’s […] 40 degrees, 30 degrees, where the temperatures aren’t rising, is that the shingles look loose, that it doesn’t look like it’s sealed. But with this [StormFighter FLEX®] product, it’s got a sealing on the bottom of it that will seal at temperatures of 25 degrees.”

He noted that even though the shingle is only warranted† down to 25 degrees, his company has had success at even colder temperatures.

“We’ve installed it [below 25 degrees] before, and it’s sealed below that, we found. But it’s been a great product for cold application,” he said.

“One thing I’ve seen is the consistency of listening to contractors. What the roofers want. What the laborers want. And they’ve worked really hard, I feel, to design what they’re being asked to design.”

Wind-Tested

Tyler Mackey | Mackey Roofing, Ada, Okla.

In tornado country, a roofing system either holds — or it doesn’t. And when an F1 tornado ripped through Ada, Okla. with winds exceeding 100 mph earlier this spring, Tyler Mackey’s installs faced a serious test.

“We had an F1 tornado come through this area … There’s damage to all these other roofs through here, damage to metal structures all around,” said Mackey.

The storm confirmed what Mackey already suspected: the sealants and design of the product aren’t just for marketing — they work. He specifically credits the innovative, advanced technology TAMKO invests in its products.

“These competitor shingles [have been] blowing off all around town,” he said. “All the shingles … we put on — the Titan, StormFighter FLEX — all withstood these winds. Not one shingle has blown off, not one tab has been lifted.”

A Severe Storm’s Surprise

Brent Calloway | English Roofing, Corydon, Ind.

Hailstorms are an inevitable part of roofing in the Midwest. For Brent Calloway, what happened to one of his customers’ homes during a recent storm was both unexpected and validating. The home had clearly taken damage, with noticeable dents and holes in the siding.

“This was some very, very sizable hail,” Calloway said. “Some [people] got up to two-inch hail in this area. [My customer’s] roof was absolutely untouched.”

He was eager to get on the roof to see how it fared with the brand new StormFighter FLEX shingle installed on this house.

The adjuster found some minor cosmetic dents in soft metals, but the shingles — impact-rated to Class 4 — showed no visible damage.

“The insurance adjuster came out, checked it out, and was happy to see that there was no damage to the roof,” Calloway noted. “And the customer is thrilled to know that their home is safe and secure.”

To Calloway, the product’s resilience wasn’t just about the shingles — it was about trust. TAMKO empowered them to sell confidence to the homeowner, confidence that was rewarded with performance.

“This house had lost all of the siding. And that caught my attention. It was all over the driveway. It was all over the yard. And I said, ‘Oh boy, I bet I’m going to find some damage here on the roof.’ I got up there and there was absolutely nothing.”

Built Tough

Justin Quade, Shingle Pro Roofing

For Bill Ball, roofing on the Florida Gulf means preparing for the worst-case scenario. Hurricane Ian put that preparation to the ultimate test.

“Every [Titan XT] shingle we put on had no issues whatsoever,” Ball said. “This house had lost all of the siding. And that caught my attention. It was all over the driveway. It was all over the yard. And I said, ‘Oh boy, I bet I’m going to find some damage here on the roof.’ I got up there and there was absolutely nothing.”

Ball isn’t alone in that estimation. Justin Quade of Shingle Pro Roofing started using Titan XT® shingles for his projects two years ago, and the difference in performance has been staggering.

“I’ll never go back to where I was,” Quade said. “I sent out a mass email after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Not one of our roofs was compromised in any way.”

These teams didn’t just install products—they made decisions that protected entire properties.

Why It Matters

Weather damage is expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating—for roofers, insurance companies, and especially homeowners. When shingles fail, the ripple effects can mean extensive repairs, disrupted lives, and strained resources for everyone involved.

Among these contractor stories is a consistent theme: confidence. While no product can eliminate the risks that come with extreme weather, contractors have seen outcomes that reinforce a sense of reliability. TAMKO’s shingles are built with features that support long-term performance, which can translate to fewer callbacks, smoother insurance processes, and peace of mind for homeowners facing uncertain forecasts.

In an industry where real-world durability matters more than marketing, contractors value a product that helps them deliver quality work and stand behind what they install — TAMKO’s Proline® shingle series brings that to the table.
