The Difference Between Expansion Joints and Construction Joints — Explained
Architects and engineers sometimes use these terms interchangeably — but they are fundamentally different, and confusing them leads to costly specification errors.
Construction Joint
A planned break in a concrete pour where work stops temporarily. Both sides of the joint move together as one structure. No relative movement is expected.
Expansion Joint
A deliberate gap in the structure that allows independent movement between two sections. Movement is expected and designed for — thermal expansion, seismic displacement, differential settlement, or live load deflection.
Why It Matters
If you cover an expansion joint with a rigid filler or treat it as a construction joint, the building’s movement will crack the filler, damage adjacent finishes, and cause water ingress. The joint cover system must accommodate the expected movement range.
