Use this checklist on your next project to ensure expansion joints are properly specified and will be installed correctly.

Design Stage

• ☐ Identify all expansion joint locations on structural drawings
• ☐ Calculate expected movement range (thermal + seismic)
• ☐ Specify joint type by location (floor, wall, roof, basement)
• ☐ Include joint cover system in architectural drawings
• ☐ Add expansion joint BOQ items to tender documents

Procurement Stage

• ☐ Get shop drawings from supplier matching actual gap widths
• ☐ Verify material certificate (ASTM 6063 T6 for aluminium)
• ☐ Confirm EPDM seal specification (temperature range, shore hardness)

Installation Stage

• ☐ Clean joint gap before installation — no debris or loose concrete
• ☐ Verify actual gap width matches shop drawings
• ☐ Install backer rod before sealant application
• ☐ Allow sealant to cure before opening to traffic
• ☐ Inspect and document installation for O&M manual
