QUINCY — The Illinois Department of Transportation is taking steps to try and ensure another failure on Quincy’s Memorial Bridge doesn’t happen.
Following the month-long closure of the bridge for the emergency repair of an expansion joint, IDOT will begin the process of inspecting and reinforcing all the joints on the bridge beginning on April 13.
The bridge will remain open during the three-month project with traffic limited to one lane during the work. Message boards, barrels, and merge-arrows will be used on the Missouri approach side of the river to direct traffic as needed.
IDOT notes that drivers coming into Quincy from Missouri using the Memorial Bridge should expect delays and allow extra time for trips across the bridge. As with any construction zone, drivers should pay close attention and obey construction-zone speed limits.
IDOT and the Missouri Department of Transportation have been working on a joint plan to build a replacement for the the nearly-century-old bridge with construction tentatively slated to begin in 2029.
