The new wheeled excavator series from Liebherr has successfully landed itself on the winning list of leading companies and design studios. The A 909 Compact and A 911 Compact Litronic received recognition at the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” design awards. The Red Dot jury honoured both models in the Product Design 2026 category with 96 out of a possible 100 Red Dot Winner Points.

The two Liebherr wheeled excavators A 909 Compact and A 911 Compact are compact yet powerful all-round machines for demanding construction applications. The models in the nine- and eleven-tonne classes have been developed from scratch, featuring all-new technology, high efficiency, and first-class workmanship. All components — from the comfortable cab interior and the new INTUSI (Intuitive User Interface) operating system to the visually optimized exterior — have been consistently designed for functionality and user benefit.
Designed with compact dimensions, powerful hydraulics, and precise controls, the new wheeled excavators offer maximum manoeuvrability and flexibility, even in the tightest of spaces. Despite their compact design, both models feature a spacious operator cab, optimized with all-round visibility, ergonomics, and safety features. The intuitive and customizable INTUSI operating system is complemented by newly developed joysticks with innovative functions. Both machines are easy to transport, quick to set up, and can quickly adapt to new operating locations.
The Red Dot Design Award honours advancements in design and operability
Since 1955, the Red Dot Design Award has been given to products that stand out for their particularly high design quality. At the centre of the competition is the evaluation by an independent, international jury of experts. All submissions are intensively scrutinised and evaluated against key criteria of good design, including functionality, use, responsibility, and design quality. The jury comprises experts from a wide range of disciplines, ensuring objective and holistic judgement.
In order to be able to differentiate between the variety of design achievements, the competition is divided into three disciplines: Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. Today, the “Red Dot” award is recognised worldwide as a seal of high design quality. The award-winning designs are presented in yearbooks, exhibitions in the Red Dot Design Museums, and online.
