LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Lane closures are scheduled on the Kennedy Bridge this week as crews shift traffic for expansion joint repair.
Work to replace the expansion joints in the right three lanes of the Interstate 65 South bridge is finished. Now, work will move to the left three lanes as part of the final phase of the project that began last year.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said Tuesday rolling roadblocks and lane closures will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, and continue through 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 to shift the work zone.
During that time, two lanes of the bridge will be open. The shift in work also means the ramp from I-65 South to Interstate 64 West will reopen after weather and unexpected repairs delayed its reopening.
The work in the left lanes will require an overnight closure of the bridge, though dates have not yet been announced.
The joint replacement project is expected to be finished this fall.
It’s part of a $6.9 million project to replace the joints on the bridge, which is expected to be completed by April 2026 with “intermittent lane closures to be anticipated throughout the duration of construction.”
Expansion joints are a “component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking and to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge,” KYTC said.
