Lane shifts and rolling roadblocks begin Friday as Kennedy Bridge enters final phase; drivers should expect delays.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lane shifts and rolling roadblocks are set to begin Friday as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge moves into the final phase of its expansion joint replacement project.
Crews have finished replacing joints in the right three lanes and will now shift work to the left three lanes. Rolling roadblocks and lane closures on I-65 South are scheduled from 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, through 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. During that time, southbound traffic will be reduced to the right two lanes.
The I-65 South to I-64 West ramp will reopen this weekend. After the traffic shift, all vehicles will use the right three lanes while crews work in the left lanes. That pattern will remain in place through the end of the project.
Overnight bridge closures are also expected during this phase to prevent movement while crews perform steel repairs beneath the roadway. Additional details will be announced when available.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said it has coordinated the work with other Louisville-area projects to limit traffic impacts.
The $6.9 million project began in February 2025 and is expected to be completed this fall. Officials say replacing the bridge’s expansion joints will provide a safer, smoother ride and help preserve the bridge’s long-term integrity.
Drivers should expect delays and plan alternate routes.
