A concerned viewer recently reached out after noticing what appeared to be a crack in the Galena Creek Bridge, prompting questions about the safety of one of northern Nevada’s most well-known crossings.

After reviewing the photo, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) confirmed the structure is not damaged and that what appears to be a crack is actually a standard expansion joint, an intentional and essential part of the bridge’s design.

According to NDOT, expansion joints are pre-engineered components that allow bridges to safely expand and contract as temperatures change. Without them, natural temperature fluctuations could cause stress or cracking in critical elements of the bridge, such as the concrete deck.

“There are several expansion joints built into the Galena Creek Bridge as part of its overall engineering design,” NDOT said in a statement.

NDOT also explained that the joint can look more concerning depending on the angle from which it is viewed. From certain perspectives, expansion joints on both the northbound and southbound bridges can visually line up, making the joint appear longer or more pronounced than it actually is.

Transportation officials emphasized that the bridge remains safe for travel and continues to be regularly inspected.

NDOT encourages drivers who notice potential roadway issues to report them, noting that public awareness helps ensure Nevada’s infrastructure remains safe and well-maintained.
