The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will begin steel repairs on the Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge in Boone County on Monday, Jan. 20. Crews plan to test core samples on the westbound side of the bridge. Concrete barriers have been installed to protect contractors and traffic during repairs and will be up for the next three to four months. A single-lane closure will be in place in both directions until repairs are complete. Lane closures are to be expected throughout the summer. KYTC has also implemented weight limits for emergency vehicles. Single axle: 16 tonsTandem axle: 23 tonsGross weight: 31 tons KYTC will provide updates on lane closures and other traffic impacts.A reduced speed limit of 55 mph will be in effect until repairs are finished. Overweight and over-dimensional vehicles are prohibited due to lane restrictions. The bridge repair project is part of a federally required inspection of older bridges across the county built with “T-1” steel, a high-strength steel that is highly responsive to welding and machining.A 2023 inspection on the Carroll Cropper bridge identified 15 spots that would need future repairs but did not pose immediate safety issues.Consultants and KYTC engineers worked to create a repair plan to prevent potential fractures and address the problem areas. In December 2024, analysis showed that other repairs would be needed for a floor beam and an expansion joint, a component of the bridge’s surface that allows for thermal expansion and contraction. The floor beam and expansion joint repairs have been added to the T-1 steel project to speed up the repairs. M & M Services Inc. is performing the $3.6 million project on behalf of KYTC. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025. The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.More information on the project can be found on the KYTC website.
