Lane closures on Kennedy Bridge extended through 2025

Lane closures on the Kennedy Bridge will extend through 2025 as KYTC replaces expansion joints.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lane closures on the Kennedy Bridge will be extended, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The right three lanes and right shoulder of the bridge that carries traffic on I-65 South over the Ohio River will be closed through the end of 2025.

KYTC confirmed it is part of a project to replace the bridge’s expansion joints. Those joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, allowing thermal expansion and contraction due to weather to prevent concrete from cracking and to preserve the bridge’s structural integrity.

Crews will begin installing barrier walls on the bridge on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will cause the right four lanes to be temporarily closed and two through lanes will remain open. Drivers will still have access to I-64 and I-71 and should expect delays.

KYTC had to close the left three lanes on the bridge earlier this year due to damaged expansion joints on the Indiana approach. Crews made repairs and the left three lanes reopened in April.

The expansion joint replacement project is expected to be completed by April 2026 with an estimated cost of $9.6 million.
