Expressway Expansion Joint Repairs Begin After Report

The Federal Ministry of Works on Wednesday disclosed that it had begun the process of repairing some damaged expansion joints on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following a PUNCH Metro report.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Keesha, disclosed this on Wednesday while responding to an enquiry on the state of the road.

PUNCH Metro reported on Wednesday that some motorists along the expressway expressed concerns over the damage to some of the expansion joints, both inward and outward, of the Kara bridge section.

The report highlighted observations by our correspondent who visited the expressway and gathered that the rubber cover of the expansion joints had peeled off.

At the same time, a pothole was sighted at another part of the bridge.

Several vehicles were seen avoiding the damaged parts of the intersection on the Kara area outbound Lagos while those who seemed unaware rammed into it.

Speaking with our correspondent, the motorists expressed concerns that if attention was not paid to the damaged intersections, the consequence could be dire.

They also lamented how their vehicles had been impacted by ramming into the damaged expansion joints.

Responding in a terse message, Keesha noted that plans were in place to fix the damaged expansion joints.

“We are in the process of repairing it,” she said in a text to our correspondent.

This scheduled repair is part of the series of repairs that had been carried out on the expressway since its completion.

Recently, motorists plying the Ogere section of the expressway experienced several days of gridlock because the repair which involved the scrapping and re-laying of asphalt, left motorists stranded.

Also, the Federal Government disclosed in April that it would soon carry out a repair on the damaged Lotto Bridge along the same expressway.

Kesha had announced that the section of the expressway where the bridge was damaged would be closed down for repair works.
