The Roodepoort Northsider received various messages of inquiry after a video circulating online caused concern among shoppers about the safety of expansion joints at Cradlestone Mall.
According to Cradlestone Mall marketing manager Kamogelo Phatlhane, the video in question shows a zoomed-in view of the expansion joints, making them appear larger than they are. In reality, these joints are about 5cm wide and are a standard part of building design. She says they are present in many malls and public spaces and are well within structural safety regulations.
“These are not cracks [referring to what is shown in the video]. The building materials expand and compress, changing their size in response to temperature changes. This keeps the structure from cracking and collapsing. We can assure our shoppers that they should not be concerned, as this is a normal procedure.
“The mall’s management team takes safety very seriously and remains committed to providing a secure and welcoming environment for the community. Regular inspections are conducted by professionals to ensure that the mall meets all safety standards.
“Our team is always available to answer any questions or concerns shoppers may have. We want to reassure the public that the mall is a safe place for everyone to enjoy,” Phatlhane explains.
Cradlestone Mall’s management hopes to alleviate unnecessary worry and continue to provide a safe and enjoyable shopping experience for all.
