More Kennedy Bridge lane closures expected as major construction begins in July

Three lanes of the Kennedy Bridge are expected to reopen in early April.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three lanes of traffic on the Kennedy Bridge, which connects Louisville and southern Indiana, will soon reopen but drivers should expect more closures in the coming weeks.

The toll bridge carries I-65 South over the Ohio River and crews have been preparing for a massive construction project to replace all of the bridge’s expansion joints.

“Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking,” Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) said.

The three left lanes of traffic have been closed since late February as a safety precaution.

On Monday, KYTC said two lanes will reopen while the leftmost lane will stay closed from Tuesday, April 1 until Friday, April 4. The closure will shift to the left two lanes so construction equipment can be removed.

All three lanes are expected to reopen by rush hour on Friday, April 4.

More Kennedy Bridge lane closures expected

The joint replacement project costs $6.9 million and is expected to wrap up in April 2026, according to KYTC.

KYCT said the new joints are expected to arrive in July and that’s when the major construction project is set to begin.

Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures throughout the duration of construction.
