All expansion joints on the bridge will be replaced.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Drivers may experience some delays crossing a bridge connecting southern Indiana to Louisville over the next year.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said beginning Thursday, Feb. 27, there will be extended lane closures on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.
Officials said the left three lanes of the toll bridge, which carries I-65 South over the Ohio River, are closed.
Two lanes of traffic will still remain open, however.
What’s Happening on the Kennedy Bridge?
Crews will be working on a long-planned project to replace all expansion joints on the bridge. The current closures are a safety precaution as crews prepare for major construction to begin this summer.
“Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from creaking,” KYTC officials said.
The joint replacement project costs $6.9 million and is expected to wrap up in April 2026.
Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures throughout the duration of construction.
You can also expect merging traffic, delays, or need to find an alternative route as additional lane closures or and traffic impacts are announced in the coming months.
