Louisville’s Kennedy Bridge to close for several hours this week

The Kennedy Bridge closure will allow crews to continue work on a bridge expansion joint replacement project.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If you often take the Kennedy Bridge to get between Louisville and southern Indiana, you should be aware of an overnight closure this week.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) said on Wednesday that the bridge will fully close starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9. The bridge will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

All lanes of I-65 South will be closed just past Exit 1 to U.S. 31 South/Stansifer Avenue/10th Street in Jeffersonville, Ind.

KYTC said drivers should plan to detour by taking I-265 West to I-64 East and then reconnect with I-65 South.

The overnight bridge closure will allow crews to continue work on a bridge expansion joint replacement project to maintain and preserve the structure.

“This work involved precision machining, known as line boring, and the bridge must remain free of traffic to ensure he accuracy and alignment of the repairs,” KYTC added.

Additionally, KYTC said the I-65 South to I-64 West ramp closure, which began in mid-November, will remain in place through January. The right three lanes and right shoulder of the Kennedy Bridge also remain closed.

KYTC said drivers should expect one more full overnight closure on the Kennedy Bridge as crews begin shifting operations to work on the left lanes of the bridge.
