Portland pool to reopen in July after being shut down since last summer

Pier Pool officially opens July 14 after being closed since last summer to undergo repairs.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland’s Pier Pool is expected to reopen mid-July after closing for repairs last summer.

According to Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), construction work for the 84-year-old Pier Pool, located at 9457 North Bristol Avenue, will continue through early July, then it officially opens July 14 for full operation, including swimming lessons.

Crews have finished most of the critical repairs, including replacing 1940s-era pipes and boilers, rebar dowel work and pouring new concrete. The crews had run into an unexpected issue with the expansion joint running through the center of the pool, where the pool wall meets the pool floor; PP&R said only one product can seal said joint, and it has a “long lead time.”

PP&R said crews will repair and reseal cracks and expansion joints, improve the drainage, paint the pool and perimeter fence wall, have new fencing installed, and conduct plumbing tests. PP&R had secured funding last November for the repairs.

Pier, Creston and Peninsula Pools will remain open through Sept. 5, and other outdoor pools are scheduled to open for the summer season, starting June 20.

In the meantime, the agency is building a new, year-round indoor aquatic center at Northgate Park; construction is expected to begin in 2027.
