Pune: The strengthening works to increase the lifespan of eight bridges on the Mutha and Mula rivers, along with two flyovers, are expected to get over by April next year, PMC officials said on Saturday.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is replacing the bearings and expansion joints of these bridges. Besides, the tarring of carriageways is being taken up in a phased manner. “The strengthening works are being done to ensure that these structures last for the next 15 years. The bearings of seven bridges have been replaced so far. The work on the expansion joints of all the bridges will be completed by April,” a senior civic official said.
The administration had appointed a technical committee to check the status of the bridges and flyovers. “The works are being undertaken based on the recommendations of the committee. Last year, the administration repaired the YB Chavan Bridge on Karve Road. A detailed plan was drawn up for other bridges too,” the official said.
Another official said, “The replacement of bearings and expansion joints will reduce the jerks when a vehicle travels on a joint. The move will also provide a smoother drive for motorists. The structure of all bridges and flyovers is safe for vehicular traffic.”
While the administration said no major traffic diversions would be required during the repair works, it would work in coordination with the traffic police if diversions become a necessity. Some of the bridges slated for repairs are Rajiv Gandhi Bridge, New Sangam Bridge, Mhatre Pool, and VB Patil Bridge, while such flyovers are the Veer Savarkar flyover on Karve Road and another on Katraj-Kondhwa Road.
Daily commuters said some bridges were seeing bottlenecks at both ends and that the administration should work on measures to clear them. According to the citizens, bottlenecks are present at one end of Mhatre Bridge, Mundhwa Bridge, Veer Savarkar flyover, Kalyaninagar Bridge and Yerawada Bridge.
